GNPC was established as a State-owned entity and given legal backing by two main statutes i.e. PNDC Laws 64 and 84. The PNDC Law 64 of 1983 mandates the Corporation "to undertake the exploration, development, production and disposal of petroleum" and PNDC Law 84 establishes the legal framework governing the contractual relationship between the State, GNPC and the prospective investor in upstream petroleum operations. These two statutes are supplemented by the Petroleum Income Tax Law, PNDC Law 188 of 1987. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, was established on April 1, 1977, under the statutory instrument-Decree No.33 of same year by a merger of Nigerian National Oil Corporation, NNOC, with its operational functions and the Federal Ministry of Mines & Power with its regulatory responsibilities. This decree established NNPC, a public organization that would, on behalf of Government, adequately manage all government interests in the Nigerian Oil industry. In addition to its exploration activities, the Corporation was given powers and operational interests in refining, petrochemicals and products transportation as well as marketing. Between 1978 and 1989, NNPC constructed refineries in Warri, Kaduna and Port Harcourt and took over the 35,000-barrel Shell Refinery established in Port Harcourt in 1965.

GEPetrol was established as the National Oil Company of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea by Presidential Decree in February 2001, and became operational in 2002. The company has quickly moved to perform its new duties: * GEPetrol manages the state’s participation as a shareholder and other rights and obligations derived from the CPP (PSCs) signed before its creation. * GEPetrol acts as agents for the sales of the State’s share of hydrocarbons. * GEPetrol is responsible for the promotion of open acreage within Equatorial Guinea. * GEPetrol is responsible for undertaking training programmes to develop the skills of staff and to provide access to the most advanced technologies, techniques and knowledge of the oil industry. * GEPetrol is responsible for environmental policy and implementation. * GEPetrol may participate, either solely or as a partner with other national or foreign companies, in exploration and production activities either within Equatorial Guinea or abroad. SONAGAS GE is the national gas company created under presidential decree number 45/2005 dated january 24. The GOC was conceived by a group of Oil, Gas and Energy industry professionals, ahead of Ghana’s new energy sector policy and realization of first oil.
